Friends,

Hermina Patel, a Middlesex-trained accomplished journalist has been appointed by the Afya Kenya Foundation as the Goodwill Ambassador for the soon-to-be launched Mentorship Programme. From March, we will be reaching out our members who feel that they can mentor young girls living in Mukuru Slums in partnership with Hope For Teenage Mothers with a view to helping them overcome adversity.

Haanee Khan, a Nottingham-trained lawyer based in Nairobi, joins us as the Afya Kenya Foundation’s Spokesman. Haanee will play the role of liasing with the media and interested parties on matters pertaining to the Foundation.

In other news, David Kiilu, the burns victim from Kitui West has arrived in Nairobi for his scheduled surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital courtesy of Kitui West MP Hon. Charles Nyamai and the Friends of Afya Kenya Foundation.

The expedition to Riruta was very successful. We managed to deworm 2, 000 children from seven different schools in partnership with the Riruta Women’s Community Based Organization. The Women’s Initiative used to care for upto 260 children until the end of last year when a lack of funding compelled them to cut the number down to 100.

Please pencil it into your diaries…The effervescent Art For Afya is all set for Wednesday 24th, February at Mwenda’s in Utalii House. Our star attraction is the hugely talented Chris Adwar amongst others including Sauti Sol, Dan ‘Chizi‘ Aceda and Elani.

Regards,
Wambui Wanyoike
